I’m George Hirst, President of Average Joe’s
Pergola Depot. I have been in the carpentry business
for 15 years doing everything from framing houses, to
interior trim, cabinets and any other thing you can
think of. If it involves cutting wood I’ve done
it. After a long time in the industry I started a custom
deck, fence and rail company called Surfside Woodworks
in the Central Florida area. One day while building
a custom pergola in an upscale neighborhood I was going
about the normal routine of what it takes to build a
custom pergola as I’ve done many times before,
when the thought popped into my head:
“Hey, I could design easy to assemble pergola
kits based on the pergolas that I custom build on a
daily basis, that would be really easy for people to
put together.”
So I did some research online and found that I wasn’t
the first one to think of this nifty idea. As I kept
looking further and further into it I found that every
website that sells pergola kits online were all marketed
toward people with higher upscale homes. Most of the
pergola kits were confusing to order, and there were
not many options to choose from. They were way overpriced,
and some of them didn’t even have a picture of
the kit that you’re trying to order. So, that’s
when I decided to start Average Joe’s Pergola
Depot and build these same pergolas that I was building
for mostly upscale homes, and make them available for
the Average Joe at Average Joe prices. I wanted to see
average people like myself being able to enjoy their
backyard space the same as the people in the upscale
neighborhoods whom I was mostly working for.

sizes to choose from. We always use either Cedar
or .40 ACQ Pressure treated pine lumber.
(This is basic marine grade lumber which is a higher
grade than what is normally found in your home improvement
stores.) and we only use stainless steel hardware
to prevent rotting. Every kit comes complete with all
pre-cut, pre-drilled lumber that is pre-marked for easy
assembly. They also include a set of step by
step instructions to guide you through the assembly
process. Two people can easily have most kits set up
in four hours or less, with absolutely
no construction knowledge whatsoever. It's that easy!
